If you’re a fan of spotted cattleyas, this new breeding should be near the top of your want list. This cross will advance the state of the art in tetraploid spotted cattleyas, and we’re very excited to see where this grex will lead. We have been diligently working to develop hybrids that “boldly go where no one has gone before” (sounds like Star Trek).  The flowers of Comets Tail (C. aclandiae x C. Landate) look like a super improved C. aclandiae but with 4 flowers per inflorescence. Our 4n Mareeba Tiger (C. leopoldii x C. schilleriana) has huge flowers with rock hard substance, amazing color, and spots. This grex will produce tetraploid offspring, which is rare in bifoliate breeding. Expect large flower size with heavy substance, strong spotting, and bold, contrasting fuchsia/red lips. This is one of those “very cool” hybrids, and even species lovers will appreciate this cross. Among many other good reasons to grow these, the offspring will flower in summer when few other cattleyas are in bloom.
